Burgess Road Library is the busiest community library in Southampton. Since 2016 we have kept the doors open here at Burgess Road for 26 hours a week (across four days) running a full public library service, staffed only by volunteers.

With approximately 20,000 visitors a year we are a a valuable community resource.

But we want to do more. In order to keep the library sustainable into the long-term, we hope to appoint a part-time Community Library Manager. Having researched how other community libraries operate, we are seeking to recruit someone who can co-ordinate and train our volunteers, and expand our activities programme.

We anticipate costs of £35,000 for the first 3 years.

Could you help?

The charity

The Burgess Road Library Management Team is a group of local volunteers passionate about keeping our local library open to our community.

Back in 2015, Burgess Road Library was threatened with closure by Southampton City Council due to budget cuts. Together with a local church, we fought to keep the library open under new arrangements, staffed by volunteers. In 2016 we took on the running of the library, and after significant renovation works, relaunched in the autumn of that year.

Since then the library has gone from strength-to-strength. From local history talks to one-to-one IT support, not to mention Rhyme Time, Story Time and a Spanish language class, we run numerous events throughout the week, alongside the full library service 26-hours a week.

The Management Team oversees this, with support from the trustees of the CIO. Each trustee has a particular connection to the library, and is passionate about seeing it thrive in the long-term.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
