Sponsor a Student's Education

for Pageant

£50.00 + £12.50 Gift Aid = £62.50
Donated to Sponsor a Student's Education’s £4500.00 Goal

The Gambia has a well structured education system, providing teaching up to and including university level. However, students have to pay school fees and the cost of books, uniforms etc. This disadvantages students from poorer families, and many have to leave school. Pageant's Sponsorship Programme enables its members to sponsor an individual Gambian student, ideally right through their education.

Unfortunately, there are occasions when a sponsor might not be able to afford to continue their donations, or there could be sudden money problems in a Gambian family. In such cases Pageant uses its Emergency Sponsorship Fund to allow a student to continue their education. The photo above shows five sisters whose education was threatened when their father died very suddenly. The three elder sisters continued their studies while working part time, and our Emergency Sponsorship Fund allowed the younger two to stay on at school.

Pageant typically needs about £4,500 per year to run this scheme. If you would like to be involved in sponsoring Gambian children, but don't want to make a commitment to one student over a number of years, then please consider making a donation to our Emergency Sponsorship Fund.

All funds raised will be passed to Pageant irrespective of whether our appeal target is reached, not reached or exceeded. If funds are being raised for a specific purpose and, for whatever reason, this purpose is no longer valid, the funds will be transferred to the charity for general use.

The charity

Pageant passionately believes that education is a major force for improving the lives of poor people in developing countries.

The Gambia is a small poor country in West Africa. Though it has a well-developed tourist industry, back from the beach and up-river many people live on very low incomes. The Gambian state provides free primary education, but secondary schools charge tuition fees, and all students must provide their own uniform, books, writing materials etc. Around 40% of Gambian children never go to school because their families are too poor to pay and many more drop out after Primary school. Our sponsorship scheme enables many poor children to complete their education. Gambian schools often lack basic facilities, so Pageant helps by sending out donated furniture and educational items, and by funding building improvements.

Pageant is a small UK-registered Charity, providing urgently needed help for education in The Gambia. We rely on donations both of money and equipment. 100% of donations goes to fund our projects, as our members' annual subscriptions are used to pay for our running costs.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
