The Gambia has a well structured education system, providing teaching up to and including university level. However, students have to pay school fees and the cost of books, uniforms etc. This disadvantages students from poorer families, and many have to leave school. Pageant's Sponsorship Programme enables its members to sponsor an individual Gambian student, ideally right through their education.
Unfortunately, there are occasions when a sponsor might not be able to afford to continue their donations, or there could be sudden money problems in a Gambian family. In such cases Pageant uses its Emergency Sponsorship Fund to allow a student to continue their education. The photo above shows five sisters whose education was threatened when their father died very suddenly. The three elder sisters continued their studies while working part time, and our Emergency Sponsorship Fund allowed the younger two to stay on at school.
Pageant typically needs about £4,500 per year to run this scheme. If you would like to be involved in sponsoring Gambian children, but don't want to make a commitment to one student over a number of years, then please consider making a donation to our Emergency Sponsorship Fund.
