About BASICS Trust

BASICS is a Christian charity based in Uphall in West Lothian. It aims to improve the conditions of life for local people through its two initiatives – The Open Door and The BUSY Project.

The Open Door operates as a community café, open six days a week serving drinks, home baking and light meals at affordable prices. It is open and available to all regardless of age, faith or background. It provides a much-appreciated space for people to meet, chat and make friends. It is staffed and managed entirely by local Christian volunteers. All surplus funds generated by the Open Door support the work of the BUSY Project.

The BUSY Project aims to assist every young person to realise their God-given potential. Hannah, the BUSY Project youth worker, runs lunch time clubs for pupils in Broxburn Academy as well as out of school clubs and events such as creative writing and cookery workshops, and trips during school holidays. The project enables young people to recognise and develop their abilities, so they grow in confidence and self-esteem. It works with young people from all walks of life, of any faith or none, and encourages them to ask big questions about their world, themselves and the role of faith in their lives.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
