I am running the London marathon this year and to give myself a little more motivation to get around it I am taking the opportunity to raise some funds for the Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team.
The team took me on as a trainee member last year and, although my Mountain Rescue training is on pause whilst I commit some time to academia, this is a slightly different way I can continue to support them.
If you injure yourself out on the hill, these are the folks that will be tracking you down, giving you medical treatment, getting you out of your sticky situation and carrying you off the hill. If you have a loved one missing they will leave work/bed/family time to search for them. If your village is flooded or snowed in, they are out getting people to safe ground, clearing up and getting medical supplies to those who need it. The list goes on. And it is all completely voluntary, with no government funding. The team spends hours training and attending callouts to be there for you at the moment when you need it. Totally voluntary. Just because.
If you can spare a few quid, you'll be helping this life-saving emergency service and making 26 miles, on road, that bit more enjoyable for me :)
If that's not enough, do it for the search dogs.
