Grassroots Action (formerly Powerful Information) works in low-income countries to inform, empower and enable marginalised communities to tackle poverty and promote better health / more sustainable livelihoods. We work with and through local partners to change lives and help indigenous organisations become more effective.
Grassroots Action was awarded charitable status in 1992, and incorporated as a limited company in 2002. We have low overheads and pay modest salaries. We rely on project grants from trusts and foundations and on donations from the public. Please consider making a one-off/regular donation to support our work empowering disadvantaged communities to help themselves.
Our projects include:
- Basic education and functional literacy for women farmers and petty traders (4,000+ have benefitted so far) in the north of Sierra Leone*
- Support to enable blind children to be educated in mainstream schools in Sierra Leone
- Reduction of pesticide-poisoning, amongst subsistence farmers, and contamination of food and water resources in Ghana
- Sending two braille embossers to an organisation for people who are blind in Zimbabwe
- Mentoring UK graduates for a career in international development.
*Sierra Leone was in the grip of a serious Ebola outbreak that killed thousands of people and devastated communities. Ebola has now been overcome but the country is still suffering and morale is low. We are working to support our partners to enable them to recover from this setback.

The Co-operative Bank are proud to be the main sponsorship partner of the Wonderful Organisation supporting charities to make a difference by ensuring 100% of donations go directly to doing good. Learn more about the Bank’s values and ethics.
We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.
We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.
We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
