Elizabeth Gaskell is one of Manchester's more important writers, internationally known and still wildly read, most famous for writing Mary Barton, North and South and Cranford. Through fundraising activity and a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant, her home of 15 years (from 1850-1865) in Plymouth Grove, Manchester has been beautifully and sympathetically restored, following years of neglect, and with the support of a dedicated team of volunteers. With the help of many volunteers the house is open to the public three days a week and is open to private groups on other days. The house is also used by the community and for regular events, and it fully accessible by lift to all three floors. In order for the this unique historic house to remain open to the public we rely on the support of our enthusiastic volunteers and on donations from members of the public and the Friends of 84 Plymouth Grove group. Long term we aspire to re-creating Elizabeth Gaskell's bedroom and would also like to re-build the conservatory which was an important part of the garden when Elizabeth lived at the house.

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.
We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.
We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
