About Olivia Inspires

A Charity to Allow the Spirit of Olivia Burt to Live On

Our daughter Olivia was a gifted and beautiful young woman who inspired others.

Only 20 years old, she was killed in February 2018 in a horrendous incident at Durham, where she was a first-year student studying natural sciences.

She was just embarking on a journey that would have doubtless seen her leaving a lasting mark on our world. But more than this, everyone who knew Olivia remembers her smile and her kindness, and how she would go out of her way to help people.

Olivia has been taken from us, but Olivia Inspires aims to allow her spirit to live on by helping young people in her home, the New Forest to realise their potential.

About Olivia

Olivia lived most of her 20 years in the New Forest, in the village of Milford on Sea. Her death came as a shock to everyone, all the more so because of her kindness, selflessness, and courage, which shone through in everything she did.

Olivia achieved many things in her short life and always tried to be the best that she could be in everything she did. She started sailing Optimists when she was 5 years old, moving into Lasers, 4.7s and Radials. She sailed internationally in GBR teams in all of these classes. As a gifted pupil at Bournemouth School for Girls, she was fully involved in her school community leading to her being chosen as Head Girl. She did all of this and much more with an infectious smile and a willingness to help others.

What Olivia Inspires Does

Olivia Inspires will help children and young people aged 11 to 18 years, whose families live in the New Forest District Council area and who are facing financial hardship. Grants of normally no more than £500, will be awarded for items or services which enable them to develop their potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and sport.

Olivia Inspires is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, registration number 1181719.

Charlie, Amani, Ben and Lucas do a big run

We are part of a large team of students from University College Durham running the Northumberland Half Marathon. We are running for the charity Olivia Inspires, a charity very close to the hearts of everyone in our college and especially close to this team. Olivia was a member of our year group who passed away in our first year. Olivia Inspires was set up by her parents and does some incredible work and we are so pleased to have it as our college's official charity this year and even more pleased to be running the half marathon in support of it.
It's going to be a race across the finish line for three fairly even runners who all have something to prove and a nice day out for one extra just hoping to finish (we will let you work out who).
In an attempt to establish himself as distinctly average at every sport, Jonesy is hoping he can run better than he boxed in aggression sessions , yet he will still document every single second of his training on his Instagram. (@bgjfit)
McKeever is purely doing this to run away from his degree for as long as possible and is hoping he will end up at least 13.1 miles away from the Bill Bryson Library. He assumes there's a chance to start an easier version of the race 2 years later if he didn't do well enough the first time.
Amarni backs himself as a 100m sprinter but Ghandi once said 'It's a half-marathon not a sprint' so the question is can he run 211 sprints back to back? His girlfriend says he's more than capable of going for a sprint a couple of times a day, so why not a half marathon?
On paper, Lucas is the most athletic amongst us as captain of the Durham men's Lacrosse first team, a clear winner surely? However, he's spent more time on the bench in his time as captain than Ben spent on the floor at his first fight. One to watch? Probably not.
Any donation you can make to this fabulous charity would be greatly appreciated and every single penny you donate goes straight to Olivia Inspires.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
