About Tiree Community Development Trust

Tiree Community Development Trust was formed in March 2006 and is owned, and managed by Tiree’s community. It represents a community led approach to rural development promoting the sustainable environmental, economic and social development of Tiree.

Our main activities are:

  • The sustainable regeneration of Tiree’s community;
  • Strategic planning and development through community engagement and consultation;
  • Local project delivery;
  • Partnership working with relevant agencies and organisations;
  • Sharing best practice and experience with other similar groups and organisations; and
  • Local capacity and skill development.


The Trust is governed by a board of Directors, resident to the Isle of Tiree. Directors are elected annually by the Trust membership.

Surf and Turf on the Isle of Tiree

<p><strong style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The Isle of Tiree is a beautiful but fragile place. </strong><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Our remote rural community is constantly challenged by a need to balance the interests of recreation, tourism, traditional crofting and nature conservation. Tiree Community Development Trust is at the forefront of efforts to manage these relationships positively.</span></p><p><br></p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">We are a small island of less than 80km². Only 650 people live here year-round. Yet, in 2017, more than 27,000 people chose to visit us! Many guests come to Tiree to enjoy surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Indeed, Tiree hosts the longest running international windsurfing competition in the world! </span></p><p><br></p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">While guests play a&nbsp;</span><em>vital&nbsp;</em><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">role in supporting our rural economy and way of life, it is clear that increasing vehicle pressure must be carefully managed to safeguard our very special landscape.</span></p><p><br></p><p>Tiree Community Development Trust, with a number of funding partners and stakeholders, aim to reduce damage to our machair habitat by offering sustainable and visually low-impact beach parking areas. The cost of implementing this project is likely to be around £250,000.</p><p><br></p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Sustainable beach access is vital to our remote rural economy. It improves our visitor experience and overall tourism offer; benefiting everything from our wider community, to businesses, to sporting events, to traditional agriculture, to threatened wildlife and habitats.</span></p><p><br></p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">It has taken 12-months of tireless struggling, against tight deadlines and numerous stumbling blocks, to reach our current position. We now have 80% of the necessary funding in place. However, if this project is to proceed, Tiree Trust and our project partners still face a significant gap. What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
