Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation
2020 will mark the centenary of Welwyn Garden City. The Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation is a community led charity which is fundraising to deliver an exciting year of celebrations.
January 2020 will start the Centenary celebrations in style with a Festival of Lights launcfh event. A huge carnival, complete with 15 floats, will take place on 11 July. Over 50 of the town’s sports and leisure clubs are planning tournaments and competitions which will run throughout the year. Our Festival of Music and Performing Arts has a wonderful array of events during the year from a talent show to a concert by an internationally renowned string quartet.
Schools have stunned the Judges with their shots in the Centenary photographic competition. Primary schools will be involved in planting bulbs and trees to commemorate the Centenary. The first ever community-led garden is planned to appear on the Main Avenue at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with elements relocated as a permanent feature.
A sculpture of Ebenezer Howard is also being planned in celebration of his vision for Welwyn Garden City – ‘a true marriage of town and country’. To appreciate the beauty of our green space, a 20.20km Centenary Walk will circle the villages around the town, with spokes leading back to the centre. The City of Trees will recognise the 19,000 different species which can be found across the town.
Finally, no 100 year celebration would be complete without a Royal Visit!

The Co-operative Bank are proud to be the main sponsorship partner of the Wonderful Organisation supporting charities to make a difference by ensuring 100% of donations go directly to doing good. Learn more about the Bank’s values and ethics.
We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.
We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.
We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
