In the past 6 months there has been an outbreak of a plague that is thought to be the worst in 50 years and scientists feared it could spread to mainland Africa and beyond.
The spread of the disease was unusual in that most of those affected have had the pneumonic form of plague, which affects the lungs and can kill within 24 hours. It can be transmitted through the air via coughing and sneezing and so spreads easily.
It is caused by the same bacteria that cause bubonic plague, and can also be spread by rats.
The disease can usually be treated easily with antibiotics but because the bacteria is constantly mutating, fears have grown about a strain that is untreatable.
Before antibiotics were discovered, plague killed more humans than any other illness. I am going to be abseiling down The Orbit, the highest structure in Britain, to raise money for Hoveraid. Hoveraid is a great charity that reaches out to people who live in remote areas in Madagascar with life saving provisions. Hoveraid have spent the few last decades reaching the unreachable, providing regular healthcare, emergency aid, water, sanitation and community health projects, mostly with a hovercraft, because they can fly over floods with ease. But we need your help to reach more people!
I'd be really grateful if you could sponsor me with as little of as much as you are able to give, or just come along and support me!
