OMG, my next challenge -- off to Africa on a mountain bike, in 25-30 degree heat, cycling 350km in the foothills of Mount Kenya over the space of 10 days. And through a game reserve with lions in it (hopefully no Hyena’s). This will be way out of my comfort zone and heaps more challenging than my normal ride around Hertfordshire lanes with stops for coffee and cake.
But after a cycle ride for Airbus in July, Neil from the Red Rubber Ball Foundation gave a presentation about this cycling project he set up in a school for the Kibera slums in Kenya, I decided then, I will support this really worthwhile programme for the kids involved.
My company will also support this project by arranging shipment for a large number of donated bikes for the Kenyan children.
These children are fitter, healthier, have learnt to share and to fix their bikes, and have built a strong group of sensible friends as a result. They can see a future for themselves. One boy said he wouldn't still be here if it wasn't for the cycling club. The school principal says school attendance has increased and the children show more confidence and engagement in their school work.
So this next fundraising challenge is raising money to start a second cycling club in another school, and enable another group of students to find good influences to shape their futures.
I am paying all my own costs, so every penny of the money raised via this page will all go to the Foundation. If you can gift aid it also, then that adds another 25% to what you give. The Wonderful donation site I'm using is great because it's a non-profit organisation itself and doesn't charge any service or processing fees
