For the 75th anniversary of D Day in June this year my son and I are undertaking a memorial trip to Normandy, riding there on an original BSA Airborne Folding Bicycle, as used in 1944 by British airborne forces. We are riding the 100 miles to Normandy from Broadwell airfield in Oxfordshire, the field from which my grandfather and many other brave young men set out by glider all those years ago.
My grandfather, Lieutenant J.D.A. Boustead of 1st Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles, 6th Airborne Division, was killed in Normandy aged 26 on the 7th June 1944, one day after D Day. As a family we have visited his grave at Ranville cemetery in Normandy many times and feel our debt to his and other’s sacrifice very deeply.
We hope to raise as much money as possible for SSAFA to help them continue their fantastic work supporting our armed forces. Thank you for your donation.
