Cambridge Youth Opera’s story

CYO's new production of Hansel and Gretel, complete is a fantastic project which involves around 150 children and young people in bringing this magical opera to life. Alongside our company of young singers, designers, stage managers and technicians, we are working with seven schools in our most ambitious project to date. All activities are completely free to participants.

Performances take place in the Storey’s Field Centre, Eddington, on 28 and 29 March. Set in a fantastical forest where anything can happen, this beautiful, funny, sometimes dark story is suitable for all ages. Booking will open in February via the CYO website.

You can help support this wonderful project. Your donation could help us:

  • £5 creates a sweet for the Gingerbread Cottage
  • £10 buys a broomstick for a Witch or her familiars
  • £20 creates a magic flower for a Dew Fairy
  • £30 creates a bag of dreams for a Sandman
  • £50 creates a costume from scratch
  • £75 creates posters and other publicity for the performance
  • £100 builds the Witch's oven
  • £150 covers the cost of programmes
  • £200 pays coaching fees for one rehearsal

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Cambridge Youth Opera

Cambridge Youth Opera (CYO) broadens the creative horizons of young people through opera. We work with young people to create age appropriate productions to the highest possible standard.

We are an open access, community organisation. We do not charge for participation.

Our activities include everything that goes to make up an opera, onstage and backstage. Many of the young people who take part have never experienced opera before.

By providing easily accessible, exciting activities, we open up what is often considered an exclusive art form, cultivate the arts as a natural part of daily life, and grow the confidence of our participants. We believe that opera is ideal for this, as it encompasses such a variety of elements and the opportunity to thrill, move and amuse both participants and audiences.

Registered Charity Number: 1166771.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
