Hilary’s story

As Ladies’ Captain of Bedfordshire Golf Club, it is traditional for me to support a particular charity during my year in office. I particularly wanted to support a local charity, and one that benefits young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I first became aware of the good work of the Sea Cadets through my husband who was carrying out research into impact of doing cadets on the life chances of the participants. The results are so impressive. The research shows that participation in cadets measurably improves self-confidence and self-esteem, social mobility, performance at school, health, community cohesion and ultimately employability and career potential.

However, once I had met unit commander, Sally, her team of adult volunteers and the cadets themselves, I was convinced that this was the charity I wanted to support. They are all so enthusiastic, so committed and have so much determination to succeed and clearly get much enjoyment out of doing it.

So here I am committed to doing three rounds of golf (54 holes) in one day on the 2nd August. Please support me, and this very worthwhile cause.

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Bedford Unit No 29 Of The Sea Cadet Corps

The unit is a independently funded Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) affiliated to the Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC). This means, in effect, that the unit is required to raise its own funds in order to maintain its premises, buy equipment and provide training for the cadets. The survival of the unit depends on the efforts of the staff, parents, cadets and the generosity of donors.

At Bedford we aim to give young people an experience that will help them grow into the person they want to be, in a safe and friendly environment. Through various activities, such as rowing, windsurfing, power-boating and piping competitions they gain skills in teamwork, gain respect, loyalty, self-discipline and learn to be the best version of themselves. Being a cadet has a lasting and positive impact on young people.

Registered Charity Number: 300002.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
