Hilary’s story
As Ladies’ Captain of Bedfordshire Golf Club, it is traditional for me to support a particular charity during my year in office. I particularly wanted to support a local charity, and one that benefits young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
I first became aware of the good work of the Sea Cadets through my husband who was carrying out research into impact of doing cadets on the life chances of the participants. The results are so impressive. The research shows that participation in cadets measurably improves self-confidence and self-esteem, social mobility, performance at school, health, community cohesion and ultimately employability and career potential.
However, once I had met unit commander, Sally, her team of adult volunteers and the cadets themselves, I was convinced that this was the charity I wanted to support. They are all so enthusiastic, so committed and have so much determination to succeed and clearly get much enjoyment out of doing it.
So here I am committed to doing three rounds of golf (54 holes) in one day on the 2nd August. Please support me, and this very worthwhile cause.
