Did you know that shockingly there are still 72 Countries in the world where it is illegal to be LGBT? Source - http://ilga.org/downloads/2017/ILGA_State_Sponsored_Homophobia_2017_WEB.pdf
There are many more countries around the world who also have anti-LGBT laws.
Our gorgeous Isle Of Wight measures 72 miles in circumference and as UKPride for 2018, we are going to rise to the challenge of walking non-stop around the outside of the Island to raise money and awareness of our LGBT communities around the world who do not share the same freedoms that we do.
We have picked the weekend of 13th-16th April for a good reason (sadly it doesnt give us much training time). During that week in April, all the Commonwealth leaders are gathering in London for Heads of Government meeting. It is shocking that 37 of the 53 member states in the commonwealth have anti-LGBT laws. This needs to end, and we urge Theresa May and also the Royal Family (as head of state for the commonwealth) to raise this issue during discussions and put an end to this discrimination and hate against the LGBT communities across the globe.
We will be raising awareness of our walk by writing directly to Theresa May and to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
We encourage anyone wanting to support our walk to get in contact with us at [email protected]
Its time for us to look beyond our shores and as part of our Pride celebrations this year, ask those difficult questions in solidarity with LGBT communities across the globe! Its time that they were able and confident to say without fear #IOWnmydestiny
