Team Jon and Brian’s story
The GR5 is a long distance trail from Lake Geneva to Nice through the heart of the French alps. The route covers a distance of approximately 650 Km with 34,000 metres of ascent and descent (15 marathons plus 4 Everests). Typically it takes in excess of 30 days to complete, although we plan to take a bit longer.
We have been fortunate to walk and explore many parts of the world, but have never walked continuously for more than 2 weeks . This adventure will challenge us both physically and mentally.
We will be spurred on by your donation and the benefit it will provide to a young person and their family.
The Red Rubber Ball foundation is a UK registered charity (number 11404443). Its objective is to unlock potential in Africa by providing educational scholarships, mentoring and more to young people in Kenya. The cost of a scholarship for 4 years of high school education is from as little as £1000 in a day school to £3200 for a national boarding school. The result is life changing for the young person and their family.
Jon and Brian are fully funding the challenge ourselves, Wonderful takes no commission and Red Rubber Ball have no administration fees. Every penny donated goes to a young person's education, please give generously and remember to gift aid.
Jon was fortunate to have a sponsored boarding school education at Christ's Hospital, Horsham. This gave him a unique experience his family could never have afforded. On leaving a charge is read, "I charge you never to forget the great benefits that you have received in this place, and in time to come, according to your means, to do all that you can to enable others to enjoy the same advantage...".
Likewise, Brian who is 65 this year, also had the benefit of a Grammar School education at a College that not only had top educational standards but excellent facilities such as their own swimming pool and superb grounds.
This fundraising challenge is our way of enabling others to have the same educational benefit as we did.
