Team John Snow College Boat Club’s story

Following the tragic loss of a Hild-Bede College student and valued DCR member, DARC, DU and DCR have all come together to raise money for Mind, a charity that focuses on supporting those struggling with their mental health. The event is open to the entire Durham Rowing Community: university students and Durham residents alike.

The challenge will take on the format of a team relay and will be to collectively row the distance of Land's End to John O'Groats.

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Mind

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem. With your help, we can help people like Laura:

'Mind brought me back from the edge. Without them, I don't know how I would've found a way out. They helped me change the course of my life.'

We believe no-one should have to face a mental health problem alone and without your generosity we would not be able to provide people with the vital information and support that can change their lives for the better. Your support will help us improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of mental health issues.

Last year:

  • Our network of over 140 local Minds supported 375,000 people, through services such as counselling and back to work mentoring.
  • 65,000 queries were answered by our Helplines;
  • 460,000 free information booklets distributed through our local Minds and charity shops;
  • 10.7 million visited our website; and
  • 27,000 people received support through our online community Elefriends, with 80% feeling more supported since joining.

However there is still so much more that we need to do.

Registered Charity Number: 219830.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
