Paul’s story

Please sponsor me to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon as I try to raise money for CLEFT. I'm running to raise money and awareness about the work they do to support long-term multi-disciplinary care for children born with clefts.

I've never run a half Marathon before. So, despite the distance being a comparatively small achievement, especially when you consider the efforts of child birth or walking on the moon, it will still be a challenge for me. Also, it should be noted that I have particularly thin legs which are disproportionately small compared to my upper body. It's the human equivalent of a kiwi fruit being propped up by two lolly sticks. So 13.1 miles will feel very far for those little guys.

Every penny helps children who are born with clefts to receive the treatment and care that they need.

So please sponsor me for this half marathon, my tiny pins need all the encouragement they can get.

Thank you so much,

Love Paul x

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

CLEFT

CLEFT is a charity focused on providing permanent, sustainable ways to improve cleft care in both the UK and overseas. Supporting a variety of projects we are helping improve the lives of people born with clefts in many different ways. Broadly these can be described in two categories:

  1. We sponsor research projects in the UK, helping to identify the likely causes of clefts, and to find ways in which to improve the treatment and outcomes for children born with a cleft.
  2. We also undertake projects in emerging market countries to support local medical teams to provide long-term treatment and care for people born with clefts. We do this by providing practical teaching in cleft surgery techniques, education on how to provide integrated cleft care, and occasionally vital equipment.

Overall our aim is to improve patient outcomes in the UK and help develop sustainable cleft care systems in countries where they are currently lacking. The emphasis on skill and knowledge transfer means that our overseas projects can develop and grow organically, changing the lives of tens of thousands of adults and children who otherwise would be left disfigured and unable to play a normal role in their society.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
