Sebastian’s story

On April 13th I will be taking part in the Rough Runner challenge. The challenge consists of a 15km run with 20 obstacles. I am participating in this challenge in an effort to raise money and awareness against the growing issue of poverty and homelessness.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s has shown a 165% increase in average count for those rough sleeping in the UK between 2010 and 2019 with London and the South East accounting for the highest percentage of rough sleepers. This is simply unacceptable and local councils have not received the funding they need to help and support they need.

It is through independent charities this issue is being addressed. A very special independent local charity called ‘Giving Back Crawley’ is one such organisation on the front line tackling the effects of poverty. Providing food, drinks, clothes and care, I have witnessed first-hand the amazing work that GBC is doing for the homeless. By participating in the Rough Runner challenge I hope to raise funds to contribute to the GBC’s services and raise awareness to the wider issue of homelessness in the UK. This organisation is truly inspiring and as a volunteer for the charity I have seen how committed they are to improving the lives of those less fortunate. I hope you can support me in this challenge so we can together work towards reducing the impact of poverty on our society.

Giving Back Crawley

We are a small local charity that serves the homeless community. We operate in Crawley, West Sussex and we are entirely run by volunteers. Our primary focus is rough sleepers/street homeless, closely followed by temporarily housed and hidden homeless. We serve our guests a free hot meal and give them some of the essential items they need to get by. We regularly have paramedics attending to give advice and carry out basic health checks. Another incredibly important aspect is taking the time to talk to them and reducing the social isolation they endure. We give them respect and compassion, friendship and hope, no matter what their circumstances may be or what problems they may have, they are always welcomed at Giving Back Crawley.

£1 is our cost for 10 hot drinks

£5 is our cost for 60 bottles of water

£10 is our cost for 120 packets of crisps

£50 is our cost for 140 rough sleeper snack bags

Registered Charity Number: 1178136.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
