This October I'll be taking part in the Retina UK cycling challenge.
Coast to coast along Hadrian's wall with a co-cyclist who has a visual impairment.
Probably in rain.
On a tandem. 😱
I'm doing this for my granny, who has lived with RP all her life and will turn 96 this month!
Despite losing nearly all of her sight, she's inspiringly strong minded, helped raise my sister and me and still shows no sign of it stopping her enjoyment of food, family gatherings and travel.
Also I'm doing it for the science! Retina UK is a great charity for directly supporting medical research in the lab to develop treatments for retinal disease.
I'm currently carrying out a PhD at Newcastle University working on a project to generate better testing platforms from stem cells to cure retinal diseases such as RP and AMD. I am excited to get involved with Retina UK to raise awareness and raise funds which directly support new scientific research!
Hopefully my legs won't fail me!
Your support in this would mean so much and any donations are so so appreciated! ❤️
Retina UK was founded in 1976 by a group of people concerned at the lack of knowledge about inherited sight loss in the medical profession, the lack of a treatments, and the lack of support for people affected. Retina UK has since evolved into a respected medical research charity and a nationwide organisation providing support and information.
