The Trust is assisting the community to raise £3200 to purchase a Raiser Chair.
Why? Well, anyone can have a fall, but older people are more vulnerable to fall especially if they have a long-term health condition. According to the NHS falls are a common, but often overlooked, cause of injury.
Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 who live at home have at least one fall a year and about half of these will have more frequent falls. Most falls do not lead to serious injury but there is always a risk that a fall could lead to broken bones etc. Struggling to get up without proper support can also risk further injury to the patient or the person trying to help them. Anyone who has suffered a fall should be checked out by a qualified person.
We are all aware that ambulance response times to this area vary enormously. If we are unlucky that could result in a person being left lying on the floor for a long time. However, our first response team are brilliant, usually arriving on scene within just a few minutes. Currently ambulances carry raising equipment, first responders do not.
We are fundraising to buy an Emergency Raiser Chair— as recommended by South West Ambulance Trust — which would be kept here in Lynton and would be available for use by the first response team for any vulnerable person in the area who has had a fall but not sustained any further injury. This would enable the patient to get back on their feet in a safe, dignified and timely manner.
A Raiser Chair is a battery-operated device that helps a fallen person up to almost standing position within a few minutes.
Every gift no matter how big or small is greatly appreciated and will help us to go the extra mile for the communities we serve in and around the Lyn Valley.
