Rema UK supports to the work of Rema Burundi in Burundi. The organisation was formed by Burundians in exile, having fled as refugees to neighbouring countries in East Africa from a terrible ethnic conflict. Initially based in Nairobi, a handful of people with limited resources but unlimited hearts set up an organisation to look after their fellow countrymen and women who were suffering in refugee camps, and help to get them home.
As more Burundians have returned home and the numbers in the camps have reduced from over half a million. Rema returned to Bujumbura with the main focus now on helping returnees to get integrated back into Burundi life, assist with healthcare issues and have their claims to their historic land addressed fairly.
Rema now also works in partnership with churches and community associations to empower people to form new businesses, learn from one another, learn new skills to earn their own income . They also hold one another responsible and encourage one another to pay back the loans borrowed from Rema. When a loan is repaid it is invested back into the community enabling someone else to start a business. One person’s success is everybody’s success.
