We deliver Scouting across a wide geographical area on both sides of the A19, supporting young people from communities including Great Ayton, Stokesley, Northallerton, Romanby, Leeming, Bedale, Hillside and surrounding villages. Our district covers both rural and semi-urban communities, enabling us to provide inclusive and accessible opportunities for young people from a wide range of backgrounds. This broad reach helps reduce barriers to participation, particularly for those living in isolated areas or facing limited access to youth provision.
We offer a comprehensive Skills for Life programme for young people aged 4 to 25. Through Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and our small but active Scout Network, we deliver age-appropriate activities designed to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, communication and leadership. Our programme encourages young people to take part in outdoor adventure, community action and skill-building opportunities that support their personal development and wellbeing.
As of January 2024, we support 409 young people across the district. This is made possible by 103 committed adult volunteers who deliver Scouting through 7 Scout Groups and 4 Explorer Units. Working together, our volunteers provide safe, high-quality and engaging opportunities that have a positive and lasting impact. They give young people the chance to try new experiences, develop practical skills and build supportive friendships that help them thrive both in and beyond Scouting.
Demand for Scouting continues to grow across our communities. Many families recognise the value of our programme but increasing numbers place pressure on volunteer capacity, programme resources and access to suitable meeting spaces. Some of our Groups currently operate with waiting lists or reduced capacity because of these challenges.
Investment will enable us to strengthen volunteer recruitment and retention, improve programme resources and expand provision so that we can reach more young people. Funding will help us engage young people who may face additional barriers such as rural isolation, financial hardship, special educational needs or limited access to local youth services.
This work aligns closely with Scouts' new "A Place to Belong" Strategy to 2035 which focuses on ensuring that every young person has access to a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment where they can be themselves, make friends and gain the skills they need to thrive. By growing our capacity and reducing barriers to participation, we can help more young people experience adventure, build confidence, develop resilience and gain Skills for Life.
With support, we can broaden our impact, ensure sustainable growth and give more young people across our district the opportunity to contribute to their communities, develop their potential and find a genuine place to belong. Most importantly, we can ensure that more young people, regardless of their background or circumstances, benefit from the life-changing experiences and supportive friendships that Scouting provides.
