A ‘leader among non-professional choruses’ (The Times), the City of London Choir celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023. Having earned an enviable reputation – both in national media and with audiences – for high quality performances and a distinctive youthful sound, the CLC welcomed Daniel Hyde as its new Musical Director in September 2024. The CLC regularly promotes its own concerts in London’s finest concert halls, with leading professional orchestras, instrumentalists and soloists, as well as performing each year for a variety of other promoters in major venues. It sings regularly at Cadogan Hall, the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square and the Royal Albert Hall. In July 2018, the choir made its debut appearance at the BBC Proms, performing Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The CLC has made several recordings with considerable critical success. These include Flowers of Field (with Roderick Williams, Jeremy Irons and the London Mozart Players), Beethoven’s Der glorreiche Augenblick with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Naxos; five stars and ‘strongly recommended’ BBC Music Magazine), In Terra Pax: A Christmas Anthology with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (Naxos; ‘all, deservedly, timeless classics... freshness, bloom, attentive diction and a palpable heart’ Daily Telegraph), Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mass in Time of War with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Nation’s Favourite Carols with the RPO for Decca in association with Classic FM. In 2023, the choir released recordings of three new Christmas carols composed by Ben Morales Frost to mark its 60th anniversary. The City of London Choir is a registered charity whose object is to nurture a love and understanding of music among its members and audiences. It is committed to creating opportunities for children and young people both to perform and to attend concerts, notably through its Young Apprentice Bass and Tenor Scheme. This aims to foster and encourage new young choral tenors and basses from London schools with bursaries. More detail of these initiatives can be found on the choir’s website.
