Anna’s story
About the challenge
The Cape Wrath Ultra is a 400km, 8-day ultra-running expedition from Fort William to Cape Wrath along the west coast of Scotland. The route broadly follows the ‘Cape Wrath Trail’ (which usually takes 20 days to complete when walking), sections of which are unmarked so there’s an element of navigation too. The terrain is hilly and rough with a lot of bog and tussock! Daily distances range from 16 – 45 miles, averaging about 33 miles/day.
The amazing Anna Ridewood, Advisory Consultant for Rural Solutions is taking part in this year's epic event and raising money for Country Trust.
Anna says, “I adore being out in the countryside and am a self-confessed endurance junkie. I enjoy pushing myself physically and am ‘comfortable with being uncomfortable’ having completed all sorts of weird but wonderful challenges, including a self-supported run the length of New Zealand a few years ago. The Country Trust is a charity I feel passionately about, as I deeply understand how important it is for people to connect to the outdoors, for their physical and mental wellbeing. I'm aiming to raise £750 which will support children, some of whom have never set foot in a field before, to have the opportunity to discover the delights of the countryside and being in nature, just as I do'.
Monies raised will directly support children living in the most deprived areas of England and North Wales.
About Rural Solutions
Following an introduction back in 2019, the Country Trust and Rural Solutions immediately found common ground as they share similar ethics and culture; a love of the countryside; a wide network of enthusiastic farmers and landowners; and a passion to share these with children from disadvantaged areas.
The Rurals team had a history of taking on epic challenges for charity and embraced the planning of a mammoth team cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats later that year. It was a ride with a twist! The ride took place on static bikes in the Conference Room in their Skipton Office, with team members taking an hour each on one of four machines aiming to create the cumulative mileage needed in under twenty-four hours. Sue Thompson, from the Country Trust, and her family came along and joined the party, with Sue’s husband Michael taking a spin on the bikes too. Amazingly, the race was successfully completed in just over twelve hours, and raised over £5,000 to support the Country Trust’s work.
“Anna’s love of the countryside and for being in big green spaces has inspired this incredible challenge; in turn this has become a powerful force for good, enabling children to also experience the countryside for themselves too. We are incredibly grateful for the determination, commitment and generosity of Anna and the whole Rural Solutions team, who have given so much support for the Country Trust’s work in recent years.” - Sue Thompson
