Moor Time’s story
Moor Time is appealing for support to upgrade the disabled toilet facilities at the venue we rent in the major school holidays for our special needs holiday club - Ben Rhydding Scout and Guide HQ, Wheatley Lane, Ilkley.
This is a super venue for us in many ways as it provides secure outside play space, level wheelchair access, different rooms for a range of activities and parking.
Unfortunately however it doesn't have adequate space in its disabled toilet for a full-size change table and hoist.
The result of this is that we can't accommodate young people who require a hoist and change table for toileting for full days at our holiday club. They can only drop in briefly before needing to go home for a change. This leaves parents and carers who transport their young person from a distance hanging around waiting in Ilkley for a call, rather than enjoying the respite that the club should provide to the full.
As you can imagine this is really frustrating for everyone, as we run sessions that would be ideal for these young people to attend for a whole day.
These weekly sessions – designed for young people with complex medical needs - run every Tuesday in the holidays and feature accessible sports, live and interactive music workshops, sensory play and stories, massage, yoga and arts and crafts.
The session is nurse-led, so a registered general nurse oversees all medical interventions and medication. The session is staffed by SEND professionals with experience of supporting young people with medical needs in special schools, respite centres and other settings, or students training in relevant areas.
Around 30 young people on our books attend this session type and among them are some of the most potentially isolated young people who come to us in the holidays, so they would really benefit from the opportunity to stay for full days and join in the fun with their friends.
We have looked at other venues for short term rent in the Ilkley and Keighley areas and there is nowhere available and suitable.
We have the kind support of the local Scout Association, the owners of the building, to upgrade the toilets and to raise money to do so. We have a long lease to rent the building in the holidays and our funding for running costs is secure, so we can be certain that holiday club sessions will go ahead.
