Kathy’s story
For those who don’t yet know, Bryluen, Lowenna and Eseld, (with some help from Mummy and Daddy!) have decided to climb to the summit of Mount Elgon, Wagagai, this December to raise much needed funds to support the development of a Human Milk Bank for the neonatal unit.
Together they will hike for 5 days and 4 nights to reach the 4321m summit of the extinct volcano that straddles the border between Kenya and Uganda.
Not all babies can get enough of their mother’s own milk, and many newborn babies who are born too sick or too small will only survive and thrive if they receive human breastmilk.????
Uganda doesn’t yet have a human milk bank to pasteurise breastmilk ???????? , so for now milk donors are carefully selected and screened to ensure the milk is safe as possible for our babies ????
The dream is to create one of the first Human Milk Banks in east Africa. ???? The next step is to purchase a milk pasteuriser designed for our setting (piAstra)???? This will remove any other viruses and moat bacteria ???? making the donor human milk even safer ????
The money the girls raise from their hike, will purchase and support the running of the first pasteuriser ???? They are so amazed at all the sponsorship so far, thank you SO much you wonderful people!
