James’s story
Pitt‑Hopkins syndrome is an ultra‑rare, lifelong genetic neurological condition that causes severe developmental delay, little or no speech, breathing abnormalities, epilepsy and complex medical needs, placing huge emotional and practical strain on families. Pitt Hopkins UK, a fantastic cause nominated by a colleague whose child suffers from the condition, is the only charity in the UK dedicated specifically to supporting children and adults with this condition. Run largely by parents, it connects families who would otherwise feel isolated, provides trusted medical information, raises awareness among healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis and care, and works to support future research into problems associated with the syndrome. Donations help ensure families are not left to face Pitt‑Hopkins alone and that hope, understanding and support continue to grow across the UK.
This year’s Charity Challenge will see 39 of us trekking across the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland. The route covers 18.4km, takes in five of the highest peaks, and is expected to take around 10–11 hours, with a total ascent of roughly 1.5km – so I’m expecting it to be a bit of a leg burner! Any donations toward this supremely worthy cause would be hugely appreciated!
