Danielle’s story
Hi all,
We are a group of 15-17 year olds who are taking part in the NCS programme. For our NCS Social Action project we will be raising money for the charity Threshold. On Thursday 11th August we will be walking 6km.
Threshold is a Swindon based charity that focuses on the issue of homelessness in the town. Their aims are 1. To prevent homelessness in Swindon 2. To alleviate the associated social exclusion of homelessness and activity asset recovery from its effects 3. To influence policy that affects the homeless and socially excluded people.
Each year, over 750 people (and rising) reach out to access their services, whether it be for advice, support, advocacy or accommodation.
We chose to fundraise for Threshold because we believe it is a charity that can help a major issue in many places and it is for an inspirational and moving cause. We believe in the cause and think that it will make a positive impact in our community.
Homeless people demonstrate worse physical and emotional health status than the general population, including those who reside in areas of high deprivation.
Research shows that homeless people are 17 times more likely to be a victim of violence and are 9 times more likely to kill themselves. They are also likely to die in their early 40s.
282,000 single people, couples and families were judged as homeless or threatened with homelessness by local authorities in England 2020/21.
We believe that these figures are too high and something must be done to bring them down.
We have the opportunity to make a difference in our community and believe that nobody should have to sleep on the street. We don’t believe that anybody should suffer in the cold or the extreme heat, and that this is an issue that needs to be fixed. Threshold can work to help solve this issue with your support.
We are asking for people to sponsor us on our walk in order to help up raise money for Threshold. We would be grateful if anybody who sees this could donate, even if you choose to donate the price of your daily coffee. Every donation makes a difference!
