Wantage Silver Band’s story
As part of multiple things Wantage Silver Band (WSB) are doing to pay tribute to the late Alan Sykes, we hope to continue raising funds to purchase a second full size tuba. This will be engraved with Alan's name and given to a young WSB player. On Sunday 9th June, at the Alan Sykes Memorial Concert, over £1000 was raised and we were able to purchase one of two tubas that we'd like to buy. Generosity from the community always amazes us at WSB and this particular evening demonstrated this tenfold.
To quote Simon Handley from the concert:
'I can vividly remember when Alan found an old tuba for me to play as a beginner. It was a B-flat bass, taller than I was at the time! Alan didn't stop there; he also found tubas for my parents and brother. The tuba, particularly the E-flat bass, was Alan's other lifelong companion.'
The Sykes Hall is now decorated with tuba and musical bunting in which people have written their dedication messages to Alan on. We'd love to keep adding to this and add your digital messages via this platform alongside your donations. We recognise that there are people from all over the country will want us to add messages and we'd love to do this for you.
So...let's not stop at one tuba! Let's raise enough for a second! Here is what you need to do:
- Donate your contribution here - remember if you're a tax payer you can add gift aid to your donation too!
- Write a message, if you wish, when it prompts you.
- We'll then copy this message onto a piece of bunting and hang it inside The Sykes Hall along with the others.
Giving younger members of the band opportunities like this was very close to Alan's heart and we hope that lots of people will want to donate to this fantastic cause!
