Laura’s story
On 22nd May, I’m running my first ever half marathon – Exeter’s Great West Run.
I love the peace of my regular runs – plodding along at my own casual pace, enjoying the solitude of the early mornings before most other people are about. Quite why I have now agreed to take part in a crowded, noisy and somewhat pressurised spectator event with hordes of competitive people is something of a mystery to me.
I do know, however, that whatever temporary physical discomfort and public embarrassment involved is nothing compared to that experienced by people without a home in Exeter. For those with no options but to sleep out, lack of privacy or sense of safety, and constant underlying exhaustion, is a daily ongoing reality.
I also see every day the tireless work carried out by St Petrock’s in supporting people and helping them find a place called home. I am constantly in awe of the patience and determination of my frontline colleagues, as they stand with and advocate for individuals – believing in their potential and the possibility of change, even when everyone else has given up.
Please support me in this if you feel able. Thank you.
