Guy’s story
Guy, Paul and James are riding to support The Anne Robson Trust. A small charity with a mighty cause and a personal story for Guy.
'Anne, or Granny Annie as she was known to me, lived nearby and played a massive role in my younger years. As she got older and less mobile, she had a fall and ended up in hospital which had an outbreak of norovirus and they refused to allow the family to see her. For a week or so, she was alone. When she finally was released to the home she was staying in, she passed away within hours.
Ultimately Gran's last week of life and last memories were of being alone. A situation no one should ever be in, but because of the realities of the NHS and family situations today, all too common.'
The work of The Anne Robson Trust includes:
- Supporting Hospitals to set up and run teams of volunteers to provide bedside companionship to patients on the ward in their final weeks or days, and emotional support to the patients’ visitors. From helping with coordinator recruitment to providing intensive coordinator training and associated documentation – we are a one-stop shop to help hospitals get support to the bedside of dying patients as quickly and efficiently as possible – this service is provided completely free of charge.
- Running our Telephone Support Service, to provide listening and compassion to people nearing the end of their life, and those facing the loss of someone they love and the feelings of isolation that can bring.
- Enabling honest and open conversations about the end of life and the ways in which families can prepare for it, with the help of our My Wishes checklist.
Just £5 provides one patient a visit from one of the team at a time they are most in need. Through the end of life volunteer teams, the Anne Robson Trust reaches so many people in their final days and hours of life – working in partnership with NHS Trusts. The more money we can raise, the more people we can help at a time no person should be alone.
“This is an amazing service. Unfortunately, patients are sometimes on their own in their final days, so to have a friendly person sitting and giving them valuable time is priceless. As nurses and healthcare professionals it is something we would love to do, but often the pressures of the ward prevent this.” – Sara (Healthcare Professional, Royal Cornwall Hospital).
Thanks for reading and thanks for the support.
