PTFA’s story

From 20th December 2024 to 26th March 2025, the children will be taking part in a sponsored read. 100% of the proceeds will go towards purchasing reading resources for the school. The Essex School Library Service, which provides multiple copies of our class novels, will sadly be stopping their service at Easter. This will have a huge impact on the children’s reading lessons, and addressing this challenge is just one example of how the funds raised will be used.
In KS2, we are able to track how many words the children have read via their book quizzes. In a similar period of time during the last school year:
· Year 3 and 4 children typically read 15,000 words. An avid reader might have reached 60,000!
· Year 5 and 6 children typically read 25,000 words. An avid reader might have reached 90,000!
Our suggestion is that KS2 children tell the sponsors their word count goal, taking into account the numbers above.
In KS1, sponsorship will be based on the book they take home, plus any other reading they may do, for example, books at bedtime, audio books and magazines. Therefore, we will provide a way to record a potential of 60 reading opportunities. Reading their school reading book at home three times a week would result in around 33 reads over this period, so, much like KS2, the children can set themselves an ambitious goal.
We would very much like all the children to take part, yet appreciate that financially times are tough. The achievements of all the children will be celebrated with certificates showing their word counts, irrespective of sponsorship raised.
The class with the most sponsorship will receive an extra donation for new books from the PTFA, matching the amount raised by that class. Additionally, the award winning children’s author Josh Seigal will be visiting the whole school to celebrate the end of our sponsored read and the KS1 and KS2 classes who have read the most will get an extra workshop with him.
