Michelle’s story
Around the end of July this year I'll be taking on the English Channel in memory of my dad. This will involve 21+ gruelling miles of swimming solo from Dover to France whilst following official channel crossing rules; wearing only a swimming costume, a swim cap and a pair of goggles.
I'm taking on this challenge because dementia is cruel. In the UK right now, almost 1 million people are suffering with this disease and around 0.75 million people are caring for someone with dementia. This disease has affected our family - we lost my dad to FRT back in 2018 - so supporting Dementia Club was a simple choice. I tend not to talk about what our family have been though because it's hard to relay how difficult it was seeing my dad slowly forget his loved ones, but if raising some money helps others going through the same thing then it's worth sharing my story.
It's been a tough year of training including feeling states hypothermia, being stung by jellyfish, nibbled by sea lice, and spending long, long hours plodding around lakes, pools and the sea. However, I've had the most amazing support from my friends and family, who I really couldn’t do this without.
Anything you can give, big or small, will mean so much. Thank you x
