East Dunbartonshire Befriending Service’s story
We are proud and delighted to announce that our volunteer Befriender, Gordon Pollock will undertake a fundraising challenge in aid of East Dunbartonshire Befriending Service (EDBS) this month (August 2025!)
EDBS is a local charity in East Dunbartonshire working to reduce loneliness and social isolation. We support over 100 people in need of company. Whether it be due to, a decline in health/mobility, bereavement, or relocation.
Gordon will cycle around the Isle of Arran, Scotland, to help promote the important work of befriending and raise some funds along the way!
Gordon's challenge begins at Brodick (ferry terminal) and will then head to the south of the Isle and cycle anti-clockwise, passing Arran's notable landmarks such as; the Holy Isle, Machrie Moor Standing Stones, Brodick Castle and the famous Goat Fell hill standing at 872m!
The 55 miles cycle - which is the same distance as Glasgow to Perth – will feature a few steep hill climbs - a fair challenge for a gent in their 70s! Gordon expects it will take around 5 hours to complete (with couple of comfort stops).

‘I wanted to do this challenge to support the work of East Dunbartonshire Befriending Service. I have been volunteering with them for the last 10 years as a Befriender. The charity is growing, and costs are rising. I wanted to do something to help by taking on this challenge to hopefully raise a few quid for the charity to help them in some way.'
