Timothy’s story
Thank you for visiting our Wonderful page. Club Triumph has chosen to support Parkinson's UK through the 29th running of the Club’s Round Britain Reliability Run. This event starts on the evening of Friday 3rd October from Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, visits John o’ Groats for breakfast on the Saturday morning, Land’s End on Sunday morning and returns to a Knebworth House finish on Sunday evening 5th October. The route visits several intermediate controls where marshals’ signatures are obtained as proofs of passage. All in all the route is some 2,000 miles to be accomplished in 48 hours in any Standard Triumph vehicle, the youngest of which will now be over 40 years old. - truly a good test of drivers and machines. This year’s event is supporting Parkinson’s UK. All crew members are raising money for this most worthy cause by securing pledges towards the successful completion of the Run. The funds raised will be presented to the Charity at Club Triumph's annual dinner in March 2026.
Mike Hockaday and I will be taking part in our 17th RBRR together in my 1966 Triumph TR4A. To date we have only failed to finish this iconic event on one occasion, in 1982. I have entered seven other Runs with other co-drivers, with one other DNF, in 1978. To date my record is 21 finishes from 23 starts in the same car – substantially more than any other. The car was bought by my father in 1970 as a retirement pre4sent to himself and inherited by me as a family heirloom. The car has been extensively upgraded for improved safety and usability in today’s traffic conditions, whilst still keeping the essential classic character for an involving drive. Crew members are of course responsible for all their fuel costs and incidental expenses on the Run. It is therefore fortunate that the TR returns 35mpg+ on a long run – not bad for an engine the basic design of which dates back over 70 years! Overdrive is fitted, operating on 2nd, 3rd and top, giving seven forward ratios and a gear for every situation.
Wonderful (www.wonderful.org) is a totally fee-free alternative to other fund raising platforms, charging no administration or processing fees. You can be confident that 100% of any generous donation will go direct to Parkinson’s UK.
Some 145,000 people in the UK are affected by Parkinson’s Disease, which results in parts of the brain becoming progressively damaged over many years. Symptoms commonly include tremor, slow movement and stiff muscles and they can extend to depression, balance problems, loss of sense of smell, insomnia and memory problems. There is as yet no cure for the disease but treatments are available to mitigate the main symptoms and maintain quality of life as long as possible.
Parkinson’s UK (www.parkinsons.org.uk) is the main Parkinson’s research and support charity in the UK. It funds research into new treatments and possible cures and also helps provide supporting services dedicated to improving the quality of life for sufferers. The Charity also provides assistance grants to those with limited means to help fund home adaptations, special equipment or respite care.
Just ten pounds would pay for a DNA sample collection that could identify a specific change in genes associated with Parkinson’s, potentially leading to new future treatments. Fifty pounds would fund a blood test to monitor the safety of a new candidate treatment.
