Chris’s story
Having worked from CRY a number of years ago, they are a charity close to my heart. And as a counsellor working in Wales, I’m especially passionate about their recent venture into improving mental health. Their project in Guatemala particularly caught my attention due to its holistic approach, so I asked a few friends to join me so we could raise enough money to fund Kids Alive and the Justice Centre for a whole year.
In Guatemala, 96% of crimes reported against children go unpunished. Statistically speaking, every day 23 cases of sexual abuse against children are reported, and every day, 6 children under the age of 14 give birth to a child as, a result of rape.
Care and Relief for the Young, in partnership with the Christian NGO Latin Link UK, are supporting Oasis children's home in San Lucas, outside Guatemala City. This residential home that is run by Kids Alive is specifically for girls who are victims of sexual violence. It is a holistic ministry, focused on discipleship and neuroscience that uses Christian principles and trauma-informed therapies to help children heal, and then be reintegrated into a safe family.
Kids Alive also runs a justice centre which focuses on legal support for children, victims of sexual violence, and their families. Seeing justice served for what they have suffered, has a huge therapeutic impact on the well-being of the child, facilitates family reintegration and contributes to a more just society in Guatemala.
CRY’s heart is to see justice done and full restoration completed in the lives of these young girls.
