Karl’s story
Once again we’ve entered Club Triumph’s Round Britain Reliability Run, 2,000 miles in 48 hours in October in my 53 year old Triumph GT6.
This year we are delighted to be raising funds for Parkinson’s UK, a charity that is personal to me. My father suffered this horrid disease for many years, eventually losing the battle in 2016. I’m doing this in his memory, and to help reduce the suffering for anyone else who has it now or in the future.
Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition affecting about 166,000 people in the UK with a new diagnosis on average every 20 minutes. Parkinson’s UK is a charity that’s here to support every Parkinson’s journey every step of the way. They are campaigning for better healthcare, funding research into ground breaking new treatments and running life-changing support services.
So yes, to quote Bob Geldorf, “People are dying now. Give us the money now”
The 2025 RBRR will be the 29th in the series that started in 1966, it was then run in 1969, 1971, and 1974, then being run every two years. 1973 was missed owing to the fuel crisis of that year and then with the Covid pandemic the event could not run in 2020. It is considered to be one of the longest standing one make car events held in the world and has earned plaudits throughout the old car motoring world. The youngest cars taking part are now 40 years old and the oldest, well some are over 70 years old.
Since 1990 the event has had a charitable basis and has raised over £880,000.00 for various UK charities, last time in 2023 the event raised over £80,000.00 for the Huntingdon’s Disease Association. For this year, Club Triumph want to raise a sum of over £110,000 and push the grand total of raising to over £1,000.000!
Its a test of endurance and stamina to drive 2000 miles in 48 hours over some testing twisty roads and only a few motorway sections by way of timed control points. Knebworth Friday afternoon and north to John O’Groats for Saturday Breakfast, and then south to Land’s End for Sunday breakfast before heading back to Knebworth Sunday afternoon. It may not seem that much fun, but its the camaraderie amongst the teams, the cars (and what cars they are), the roads, the scenery and pure sense of achievement on completion that makes the event so addictive and appealing.
Please support Parkinson's UK by making a pledge using ‘Wonderful’. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate, saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
If you would like to donate (however big or small) we would be so grateful as in the darkest sleep deprived moments when we are wondering what on earth we have let ourselves in for, we'll be reminded of your generous support, and we'll have to just dig deep and carry on!
Oh yes, importantly, these Wonderful pages do not charge any fees, and all the entry costs, fuel (for car and people) are all covered by me so every penny you donate goes to Parkinson’s UK. And if you include Gift Aid too the Government chip in a bit too! Bonus 😊
