Samantha’s story
In early 1995, Mum (Nikki) responded to a plea for help that she read in a magazine during her coffee break at work - The Matthew Rusike Children’s orphanage in Harare, Zimbabwe, which looked after nearly 100 children from 4-18 years of age, were desperate for warm clothes (it gets cold in Zimbabwe overnight during the winter!).
Mum (Nikki) and her then husband (Colin) responded by putting up posters around their home village in Wiltshire, and very soon were swamped by clothing donations. Mum and Colin set about sorting and selling those clothes, raising funds to buy suitable alternative items for young children. Within a few weeks 12 large boxes of new and second-hand children’s clothes and educational toys and books were ready for shipment to Harare.
Later, in September 1995, Mum (Nikki) & Colin took a trip to Zimbabwe where they spent the best part of two weeks helping out at the Matthew Rusike Orphanage and the Chinyaradzo Home (for children from birth – 4 years). Upon their return to the UK they continued to raise funds and in August 1996 CHILDREN FIRST INTERNATIONAL was officially registered as a charity.
Any donations made in her memory will be used to benefit a school in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, which provides education to young girls - continuing the work that Mum (Nikki) and Colin started 28 years ago.
