Tom’s story

Aston professor strides out for Parkinson’s
An Aston University professor is walking the British coastline in stages to raise awareness for how exercise can improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s.
Tom Davenport, who lectures in maths and computer science, came up with the idea to realise his goal while raising awareness for Parkinson’s EQUIP, a small UK charity for which he is a trustee and secretary.
He said: “It’s been a dream of mine to walk the entire British coastline but working full-time as a lecturer and part-time for the charity I didn’t have the option to do it as a single event.
“So, nine years ago, I decided to dedicate two weeks of my academic holidays every year to completing it in stages of between 200km and 300km a year.”
Over the past nine years, Tom has covered the distance from Edinburgh to Dorset, as well as trekking between Cornish coastal towns, Tintagel and Charlestown, in fortnight-long stages.
This September, he embarks on the latest leg of his walking tour, covering 150km from Lyme Regis to Charlestown and then going on to the Isles of Scilly.
This latest leg will join the gaps in his progress map, and Tom hopes to shine a light on the work of Parkinson’s EQUIP in the process.
Parkinson’s EQUIP enhances the wellbeing of people living with Parkinson’s through sports and creative activities which can ease symptoms and improve quality of life.
