Stephanie’s story
The Shepherds are back for Round 3 of the Round Britain Reliability Run and what better way to up the challenge for our 3rd entry than to take part in a 72 year old car with a tiny 948cc engine!
70 years ago a Standard 8 was driven non-stop around Britain all of 1,916 miles in 47 hours – and a similar Standard 10 won the 1955 RAC rally.
In honour of this achievement, we are taking on the modern equivalent – the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run - a mammoth 2,000 miles non-stop around Britain in just 48 hours in our own Standard 8.
Our car Fred was ‘born’ on 21st December 1953 and is one of the ‘basic’ Standard 8’s built by Standard Triumph in Coventry. He was the 8,491 Standard 8 produced out of a total of 136,000 produced. Fred retains original features such as semaphore indicators, filament headlamps with several 1950s period rally car additions such as spot lamps, twin carbs, tripmeter along with a few modern ones - like seatbelts!
A Standard 8 has never completed the ‘modern’ RBRR so we hope to be the first – and we will be the oldest car with the smallest engine (!)– a real underdog if ever there was one!
Wish us luck – we’ll need it more than ever this time!
Who are raising funds for?
We’ll be taking part along with 150 other Triumph cars to put our classic cars through their paces and put their reliability to the test, and most importantly to raise funds for Parkinsons UK.
Club Triumph has raised over £890,000 for charities from this event over the years and this year we hope to increase this total to over £1.1 million.
Where and when?
Setting off from Knebworth at 6pm on Friday 3rd October we'll be heading straight up to Scotland to navigate the highland roads overnight, reaching John O'Groats for sunrise on Saturday morning. After a quick breakfast stop, we'll be heading south as darkness falls on our second night.
From there, we'll continue down through Devon and on to Cornwall where we'll reach Land's End for a well-earned breakfast on Sunday morning – before heading back up through Cornwall, Devon and across Dartmoor to reach the finish line back at Knebworth at 6pm on Sunday 5th October.
