Alex’s story

This will be my first half marathon, and I've chosen to support N-Compass' Charity of the Year Blue Flamingo Cafe & Community Hub. They do amazing work for people with dementia and their carers in the Preston area.

On the 12th October, I'll run the West Coast Half Marathon, organised by Fylde Coast Runners. This sets off from near N-Compass' offices on Preston Docks and finishes at Fairhaven Lake in Lytham St. Annes. See details here: West Coast Half Marathon - www.fyldecoastrunners.com

I'm going to try my hardest to complete the half marathon in under 2 hours!

We did it! Perfect running conditions this morning as we set off from Preston, and I think it helped that the route was pretty much my daily commute plus part of my usual training run.

Completed the course (according to Strava) in 1h59m20s, smashing my target of 2 hours 🥳

Training Update: Week 21

Had an accident last weekend, resulting in this nasty cut to my forehead - don't worry, I'm okay - but it meant I couldn't do my usual Short Run on Tuesday.

By Thursday, I'd recovered enough to push my distance again, running 17km in 1 hour, 36 minutes. It was really tough towards the end; it seems obvious but it really does seem that the absolute last kilometre I haven't trained up to yet feels WAY more difficult than the previous 16.

Saturday morning Fran and I made our way to Lytham Hall (without the kids this time) for a soggy Parkrun. I aimed to beat my Parkrun personal best (PB) of 25 mins 40 seconds, and pushed through a fair bit of discomfort to post a time of 25 mins 26 seconds, smashing my PB by 14 seconds.

I'm very much in the closing weeks of my training now and it's important that I don't get sick or injured between now and the race. Fingers crossed!
