Jason’s story
Valerie lived an amazing life, which had its final chapter during Christmas 2024. As her children, we felt mum would have liked donations to a charity rather than flowers at her funeral. We have chosen The Dementia Club UK, to help others battling the condition that eventually robbed mum of so much. We must not, however, be sad: hers was a life lived well, packed with adventure with her husband, our father, Les. They sailed the world, raised a family, threw legendary parties, dined in the finest restaurants, stayed in the best of hotels, and cruised with the P&O - always and only P&O. Mum was an accomplished artist whose career was curtailed by her steadfast refusal to draw the 'rude bits' in life drawing class. She was a fierce foe, as the doorman at the Monte Carlo Hotel discovered when he stopped her on the steps and suggested she 'may not enjoy' afternoon tea at their hotel. She was an even fiercer friend. We have been overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to come to her funeral, and making incredible efforts to be there. She would be bemused and delighted. Her last words were 'Merry Christmas' - a fitting last thought, of a life filled with all the usual stuff, but also a lot of joy.
