Rob’s story
When earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes devastate communities, Serve On volunteers are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
The International Response Team is made up entirely of volunteers but before anyone is able to deploy and search in collapsed buildings for signs of life, they must complete one of the most demanding volunteer training programmes in the UK. The two years of training covers: -
- Urban search and rescue
- Rope and access techniques
- Technical search equipment
- Disaster operations
- Medical and casualty care
- Leadership under pressure
As volunteers, each trainee must fund around £6,000 to cover this training. Each trainee has to fund their own: -
- Specialist rescue equipment
- Training kit including tent, sleeping system, technical clothing, bags, and extensive PPE
- Travel to exercises
- Accommodation and food
- And of course time away from work to attend training
I am fundraising to help cover £1000 of my training costs with funds going directly to Serve On to allow for gift aid. Every bit of support helps me to train, the team to be stronger, and means that we have more chance of rescuing someone alive from a collapsed building.
