Val’s story
For my 70th bithday, in lieu of birthday presents, I am raising money for the Ashdon Jazz Academy, registered charity (No 1161413).
This charity inspires and empowers 160+ vulnerable girls and young women a year in Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon and Merton. The charity has 30 trained volunteer mentors, provides drop-in sessions in Lambeth and Croydon, holiday programmes and other events for females aged 11-21 years. The aim is to improve self-esteem and confidence to minimise the negative challenges faced by girls and young women today.
The charity was started in 2015 by Trisha Muirhead a year after the tragic death of her daughter Ashdon who ended her life aged 14 years. As a teenager Ashdon (who liked to be called 'Jazz') struggled with peer pressure, peer aggression at school and lacked confidence about being herself in a society that pressurises young women to be and act a certain way. The charity name is in memory of Ashdon and the term Academy relates to giving young women a place and opportunities to learn skills for life. Trisha Muirhead is the daughter of one of my dear friends.
The charity needs over £3,000 a week to maintain all the programmes of support.
Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to this amazing work.
