Jessica’s story
Empowering People with Learning Disabilities to have a Voice. In Memory of Annette - Always Special and Forever Loved.
Thank you for visiting our Team page in memory of Annette, who passed away unexpectedly on 1st May 2025, at the age of 50.
Annette was a daughter, a sister, a sister-in-law, an Auntie and friend.
She had learning disabilities, and was primarily non-verbal, but was known for her ability to get others to engage with her. Annette was affectionate, great fun to be with, and had a wicked sense of humour. Her infectious laugh echoed in countless gatherings.
She enriched the lives, and was adored by everyone who was fortunate enough to meet her. Her genuine nature, her beautiful simplicity and her ability to connect with people transcended all barriers. She leaves an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her - a true testament to the profound impact one person can have on the world. We all miss her so much.
Annette lived with her mother for 47 years and enjoyed activities such as swimming, cookery, pottery, arts and crafts, and horse riding. Due to the impact of Covid -19 and her mother's development of dementia, Annette's living arrangements changed in August 2021. She moved to Newland Hurst, a residential home in Droitwich Spa that supports 16 adults with learning disabilities. The facility provides care, community access, and various in-house activities like cooking, arts, crafts, and music sessions.
The staff at Newland Hurst were instrumental in helping Annette transition from living with her mother. They provided the necessary support and care, ensuring she felt safe and engaged with the community as well as taking her to numerous medical appointments. They enriched her life and gave her the love and attention that her mum was no longer able to give.
Annette participated in many activities organised by Newland Hurst, including 'Chatty Tuesdays', plays, festivals, trips out, and the Play and Stay group where she got to interact with little children and their families. The staff are completely committed to making the residents feel part of a family and we could not have asked for a better placement for Annette. We are forever indebted to them.
We are raising funds for Newland Hurst to develop a drama department for their residents. This will boost their creative and expressive skills, and help them find their voice. Our goal is to raise £7,000. This will help them refit their building and purchase costumes and props for performances.
To achieve this goal, several family events are being organised including:
- a 7km piggyback around the Lakes of Killarney, in County Kerry, Ireland. This event will be carried out by myself and my sister Christina, in August 2025.
- Carrauntoohil Climb - Annette's brothers-in-law Jerome and Tommy; Annette's nephews and nieces Aran, Fionn, Tara and Rhea will climb Ireland's highest mountain in July/August 2025.
We hope to build a lasting legacy for Annette by ensuring that Newland Hurst continues to thrive and offer even more opportunities for its residents. The drama department is just the beginning of what we envision - a vibrant space where creativity meets empowerment. Every donation brings us closer to turning this dream into reality and celebrates the incredible spirit of Annette, who inspired us all to live life to the fullest, regardless of challenges.
We appreciate any donations or support you can offer by sharing this page, to further this initiative. All funds raised will go directly to Newland Hurst Care Home.
Thank you
Jessica & Christina (Annette's sisters)
