Andy’s story
My name's Andy Ferrari and I have been the Befriending Men's Worker at Restore for the last 7 years. Restore is a charitable project within Birmingham Churches Together that aims to help refugees and asylum seekers in Birmingham feel welcome and integrate into life in the UK. We seek to achieve in two main ways. We conduct a fortnightly programme of men's activities, women's activities and a number of family activities during the school holidays. We also run a personal befriending programme where one of our volunteers is matched with an asylum seeker or refugee to offer friendship and support in navigating life here.. As a staff team we are often encouraged by the feedback we receive:
“You’ve offered something priceless: the feeling of being welcomed. Thank you for helping people not only survive but belong.”
I have accepted the challenge of a 24 hour period of silence to help raise funds at a time when Restore, along with many charities, has found fundraising particularly difficult! Those who know me recognise this will be very demanding. A volunteer's response to my plan at a recent event was 'Mission Impossible!!' I am looking for inspiration from the Brothers at Glasshampton Monastery. As such I will be heading off on Friday 5th December ahead of 'SILENT SATURDAY' on 6th December. I need to practise for the big day which I am sure will be a comfort to those I work with and on the home front!
