Alex, Alfie & Tommy’s story
We are Alex, Alfie and Tommy, all boys at Ballard, and we are celebrating our 12th birthdays in May. In place of birthday gifts, we are asking that donations are made to Challenging MND.
The charity was founded by Alex Gibson, a friend of Tommy's family, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2018, just before his 40th birthday. Alex played rugby for Brentwood, Barking and Loughborough and represented Great Britain in the decathlon in 2002. MND is a debilitating, progressing disease which involves the deterioration of the functioning of the body, whilst the mind remains sharp and unaffected. Every day, six people are diagnosed with MND and Challenging MND exists to ensure that it gives everyone of those people the opportunity to create amazing memories with their families and friends, which will last forever.
Alex Gibson decided to tackle MND head on and provide opportunities for others through his fund-raising efforts - these include cycling the length of the Outer Hebrides on a recumbent, tricycle, rowing the River Thames in a pedalo and completing the Three Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon), cycling the 484 miles inbetween.
At Ballard, students are encouraged to 'set the bar high', to enjoy challenge and to reach goals by always trying their best. Many of the values that we are developing are modelled by Alex Gibson's determination and strength, which is truly inspirational!
