Michael’s story

I have been a part of the Cumbria-Rungwe Community Link (CRCL) since I was 15. I joined CRCL as a student, and I was very fortunate to have made friends for life with a group of Tanzanian students and adults who visited Cumbria in 2019. Since finishing my student cycle, I have been very lucky to have joined the CRCL Committee. CRCL connects young people in Rungwe, Tanzania with young people in West Cumbria, UK. Through community and educational projects, CRCL has created a local, international community, which has given and continues to provide young people with an amazing opportunity to visit another country, and in doing so, learn about and experience a different culture. Beyond this, our charity equips young people with skills and opportunities that typical education would not provide them with. Our charity operates on a two-year cycle: one summer, a group of Tanzanians visit us in Cumbria, and in the following summer, we go to Rungwe to visit them. Our cycle was significantly disrupted by the pandemic, which cancelled our plans to visit Rungwe in 2020. Our charity is now liaising visits for both Tanzanians and Cumbrians, and this coming summer will be the first time that our charity has visited Rungwe since 2018. By doing Fight Club, I'm hoping to raise money for CRCL. Fight Club is a student-boxing night at The Fed in Gateshead, involving Newcastle and Northumbria university students. This money will help our charity to continue enabling a group of Tanzanians to visit West Cumbria every other year. Not only is this experience life changing for the Tanzanian students, but people across Cumbria get to enjoy and appreciate a different culture. In summer this year, I will be going to Tanzania as a group leader with our current students, and I can't wait to reconnect with the students that I met in 2019, and the group that visited us last year in 2023. This money will also contribute to other local, community development projects in Rungwe, which makes a great difference to the quality of life for locals in Rungwe. Any donations would be significantly appreciated. CRCL has been an important part of my life for 6 years now, and having the opportunity to raise money for our cause means so much to me. Please tick the Gift Aid box and fill in the required details if you are a UK tax payer, as this will allow our charity to claim an extra 25% on your donation at no extra cost to you.Thank you! :) Lots of love, from Michael and everyone at CRCL <3
