Emma’s story
On Sunday 27th September 2026, I'll be taking on a 6.7km open water swim around Brownsea Island, the largest of the eight islands in Poole Harbour, to raise funds for Serve On and support my training as a volunteer international search and rescue responder. For the first time I will be tackling this challenge without a wetsuit!
The day will begin bright and early. I'll be registering at 6:00am at Sandbanks, before boarding the 6:45am ferry to the island - the point at which the nerves will really start to set in. At 9:00am, I'll join around 150 other swimmers for what can only be described as a 'washing machine' start at Castle Beach.
Training has continued throughout the winter and into the summer months, with countless hours spent acclimatising my body to the gruelling cold conditions. It's been a demanding journey, but one that I'm fully committed to.
And the reason why?
Serve On is a charity made up of dedicated, like-minded volunteers who share a common purpose: to deliver life-changing assistance in moments of disaster across the world.
Alongside 16 others, we are training to respond to both UK and international emergencies, including flood and water rescues, resilient operations, and major incidents such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
All money raised through this page will help fund essential equipment, training and deployment items required when a crisis strikes. Your support enables us to provide essential aid and care to people in their greatest time of need.
The training ensures that skilled, qualified responders are ready when it truly matters!
I feel very humbled to be able to make a difference and hope that you are able to donate to Serve On, a charity that sits close to my heart.
